ELL 054- Reading and Writing I
- Annotate and summarize a range of college preparatory, primarily non-fiction texts of 1-3 pages
- Write multi-paragraph essays that include an introduction, a thesis statement, one to three body paragraphs, with topic sentences, examples and a conclusion that identify and interpret the ideas and information from texts
- Write paragraphs and essays that demonstrate mastery of commonly used verb tenses and a variety of sentence structures
ELL 055- Reading and Writing II
- Annotate, interpret, draw inferences from, evaluate and critically respond to nonfiction academic texts
- Incorporate ideas and information from readings, with appropriate attribution, in a critical response essay
- Use a variety of verb tenses (simple present, simple past, present perfect) and transitions (however, therefore, in addition) and avoid fragments and run-ons in written communication
ELL 074- Grammar and Editing I
- Apply the process of editing their own work
- Use grammar in academic contexts and vocabulary and word forms accurately
- Edit writing with sufficient knowledge of grammatical structures commonly used in academic writing from the sentence to the paragraph level
- Apply appropriate verb tenses, modals, and clause construction
ELL 075- Grammar and Editing II
- Use problem-solving skills to edit papers
- Apply complex grammar (verb forms (gerunds, infinitives, and base forms), nine verb tenses (three main types of clauses, sentence structure, word order, connecting words, and subject-verb agreement) in written and oral output
- Rephrase and edit writing in original essays so that there are minimal errors in global and local errors listed above so as to not interfere with meaning
