HUS 101- Introduction to Human Services
- Identify and describe the importance of key historical events in the development of human services in Western societies
- Define target populations in need of human services and describe the basic human services available to these target populations in the US
- Identify key social and political policies that affect human services and describe their impact on target populations and service systems
- Differentiate between career opportunities and job requirements in the field of human services
- Evaluate various approaches to human services
HUS 102- Alcohol/Substance Abuse Treatment with Groups and Families
- Apply developmental stage theories, know roles and behaviors of group members; and the therapeutic factors associated with group work.
- Define and distinguish different types of groups, the goals associated with each, and the tasks and roles of the leader and members of each type of group.
- Identify theories of family counseling, including commonalities, distinguishing characteristics and research literature associated with its application in practice.
- Analyze the legal and ethical issues associated with group and family counseling using Best Practice Guidelines.
- Describe how to apply theory in practice and implement groups in professional work settings.
HUS 103- Stress Management and Relapse Prevention
- Identify and describe the principles of relapse prevention and will become proficient in recognizing how triggers to relapse are integral to the relapse cycle.
- Demonstrate several techniques/skills to deal with relapsing clients, using Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
- Demonstrate proficiency at a minimum of three techniques for helping the client in reducing the stress involved in the recovery process.
- Research and present techniques that illustrate the connection between mind and body in the relapse process and solution-focused therapy.
- Identify and explain the principles and 2 programs of Harm Reduction.
HUS 104- Principles of Developmental Disabilities
- Explain the primary rehabilitative goals of community-based services available for individuals who have an intellectual disability
- Identify the Community Support Skill Standards
- Apply the principles and practice of consumer empowerment and ethical standards
- Formulate human service documentation using current nomenclature.
HUS 105- Special Topics in Developmental Disabilities
- Use the principles of Person Centered Planning in Human Service programs.
- Apply the theories of current teaching skill techniques for people who have an intellectual disability.
- Propose principles and practices of the National Community Support Skill Standards
- Justify the DDS Human Rights and dignity standards for people who have intellectual disabilities.
HUS 106- Fundamentals of Children's Behavioral Health
- Describe "family-driven" care and how it differs from "family-centered" care
- Use a strengths-based approach to help a youth or parent identify their family strengths
- Develop a crisis plan
- Use role plays and rehearsals to help parents and youth practice self-advocacy
- Navigate child-serving state agencies
- Write objective clinical reports for appropriate documentation within the framework of agency standards
HUS 151- Counseling Theory and Process

HUS 152- Current Issues Human Services
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of major contemporary issues in the field of human services

HUS 153- Supervised Field Placement/Seminar
- Practice the standards of ethical conduct in human services such as confidentiality and boundary issues

HUS 154- Supervised Field Placement/Seminar II
- Competency in the 12 Core Functions and individual and group counseling skills, including admissions, treatment, and follow up.
- Clarify distinction and importance of objective (your tasks) and process notes (your feelings) for required journal with daily/weekly entries.
- Understand counseling skills, especially in context of working with individuals, families, groups with addiction issues. Also demonstrate cultural competency and its applications.
- Know ethical issues and boundaries in the context of professional relationships. Pass the ethics exam – online assignment
- Comprehend and give examples of issues of stress, burnout, transference, self-care, and professional livelihood.
- Obtain 300 hours letter(s) and complete CADC application with official MCC Transcript. Submit application with fee to CADC agency.
HUS 200- Introduction to Counseling Skills
- Integrate basic individual counseling skills by using insight skills techniques such as interpretation & self-disclosure; and using exploration skills techniques such as open questioning and reflection of feeling
- Identify and describe the differences between behavioral and person-centered theory & techniques
- Design a basic service plan using fundamental concepts such as goals and tasks
- Integrate neutral writing in clinical notes used in human services professional settings
- Apply appropriate considerations when working with diverse populations
HUS 201- Counseling Skills
- Describe the 12-core functions of a counselor
- Demonstrate mastery of counseling skills during in-class role-play and case study completion
- Complete accurate written assessments and individualized treatment plans
- Select appropriate interventions based upon cultural considerations, clinical issues, and client preference
