Reporting for Emergency Grants to Students under the CARES Act, updated December 31,
2020
Middlesex Community College (MCC) has signed and returned to the Department of Education
the Certification and Agreement and provided assurance that MCC intends to use no
less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES
Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
MCC has received $1,852,172 from the Department of Education pursuant to the Certification
and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.
As of December 31, 2020, MCC has distributed a total of $1,840,037 in emergency grants
to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act, $893,270 for Spring 2020,
$103,350 for Summer 2020, and $842,967 for Fall 2020 semesters.
Since the declaration of the March 13, 2020 pandemic, MCC has had over 3500 students
at the institution eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title
IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial
Aid Grants to Students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.[1].
3,562 MCC students have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under
Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act in either Spring 2020, Summer 2020, or Fall 2020
semesters.
Award amounts each term were determined by estimating additional costs to students
related to an increase in electricity and internet expenses associated with the move
to online education. Amounts were based on length of study within each term with a
maximum award of $350 in the Spring 2020 semester, $300 in the Summer 2020 semester,
and $450 in the Fall 2020 semester.
Students enrolled in fully online programs or courses only offered online prior to
the pandemic were not impacted by the move to online education and therefore not eligible.
Students must be enrolled in a Title IV eligible program at the award determination
date each term.
Grants cannot be awarded to non-Title IV eligible students, International students,
DACA students, and students who do not meet Title IV satisfactory academic progress
guidelines.
In addition to the bulk awards, the Office of the President sent an email to all enrolled
students on 5-6-2020 informing them of a separate application form to fill out if
they had other potentially qualifying expenses that resulted from the disruption of
campus operations and additional awards were determined on a case by case basis.
