Applying for a Federal Direct Stafford Loan

Applying for a Federal Direct Stafford loan requires just a few additional actions on your part.

We determine if you qualify for federal loan funding based on the information entered into the FAFSA and you will be notified via your MCC email address account.

There are circumstances when you may be able to apply for additional loan funding contact your financial aid advisor if you need assistance.

STEPS REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR FEDERAL DIRECT STAFFORD LOANS

1. Complete the FAFSA

Make sure that you have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2023-2024 academic year. Complete the 2023-2024 FAFSA for the fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters.

2. How To Accept Or Decline Your Federal Direct Student Loan

If you have been offered a Federal Direct Student Loan and want to accept or decline your loan, please follow the instructions below:

To accept or decline  Federal Direct Student Loan(s)

 Go to MyMCC and sign on with your MCC User ID and password

  1. Under My Student Records:
  2. Select: My Financial Aid
  3. Select: My Award Information
  4. Select: Award By Aid Year
  5. Select: Resources/Additional Information 
  6. Use the drop down menu on the right of the screen and choose: YES OR NO to accept or decline fee use and select submit (white button on lower left)
  7. Select: Terms and Condition Tab, read and then click "Accept" or "Do Not Accept"
  8. Select: Accept Award Offer or Decline award offer if you were offered a Federal Direct Student Loan
  9. Select: Submit Decision

3. Complete Federal Direct Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling, if you are a new first-time borrower.

Before your loan can be certified, an online loan entrance counseling session must be completed.

  • Sign in using your FSA-ID
  • Follow the instructions and take the quiz
  • You will need to answer 12 of the 15 questions correctly
  • At the end of the quiz, make sure you click on Middlesex Community College - Bedford
  • The MCC Financial Aid Office will receive confirmation electronically that you have completed the Entrance Counseling

4. Complete the Federal Direct Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN), if you are a new first-time borrower at the StudentAid.gov website.

You will need to sign your MPN online.

  • Remember to log in using the 'I'm an Undergraduate Student' block
  • Sign in using your FSA-ID
  • For MPN Type Selection, choose subsidized/unsubsidized
  • Complete all 9 steps
  • The MCC Financial Aid Office will receive confirmation that you have completed your MPN electronically.
