Steps for Project-Based Service-Learning
Identify MCC Course
- Decide which Student Learning outcomes the project will seek to meet
- Brainstorm possible projects or community issues of interest
- Identify a local community partner
- Arrange a three-way meeting with the community partner, faculty and Director of Service-Learning
- Design the project as an integrated part of the course
- Plan the reflection assignments and assessment component (Readings, reflection assignments, class discussions, assessments, and presentations)
- Revise syllabus
- Introduce service-learning to students as part of the curriculum, not an add-on
- Have the community partner meet with the students
- Oversee the project as part of a comprehensive curriculum
- Produce a product for the community partner
- Share reflections/presentations/outcomes as part of the curriculum
- Assess student learning
- Celebrate the achievement
