Steps for Project-Based Service-Learning

Identify MCC Course

  • Decide which Student Learning outcomes the project will seek to meet
  • Brainstorm possible projects or community issues of interest
  • Identify a local community partner
  • Arrange a three-way meeting with the community partner, faculty and Director of Service-Learning
  • Design the project as an integrated part of the course
  • Plan the reflection assignments and assessment component (Readings, reflection assignments, class discussions, assessments, and presentations)
  • Revise syllabus
  • Introduce service-learning to students as part of the curriculum, not an add-on
  • Have the community partner meet with the students
  • Oversee the project as part of a comprehensive curriculum
  • Produce a product for the community partner
  • Share reflections/presentations/outcomes as part of the curriculum
  • Assess student learning
  • Celebrate the achievement
