Civic Engagement

At Middlesex, we strive to enrich students' educational opportunities, meet community needs and foster civic responsibility throughout the college and the community at large. We do this by integrating service and action into the academic curriculum and throughout the student experience.

We encourage students to become active participants in community engagement activities, including Service-Learning. Many consider these to be among the most meaningful experiences of their education. And these experiences help to forge meaningful collaborations between faculty, staff, students and community partners that are critical to supporting student success.

Middlesex is one of five U.S. community colleges - and the only community college in Massachusetts - selected to participate in a national initiative supporting civic learning and demographic engagement by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

Middlesex was selected by Campus Compact as one of only 13 colleges in the nation to be studied as a model of exemplary practices of civic engagement. Further, we have consistently been chosen for the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Among the many opportunities to become involved are the following:


In collaboration with students, faculty, and local communities, the Office of Civic & Service-Learning aims to facilitate student learning through transformational service experiences that meet identified community needs. Additionally, OCSL seeks to provide civic engagement opportunities for students to develop into socially and civically responsible citizens.


Learning Outcomes

Students who participate in civic or service-learning will be able to…

  • Distinguish the unique mission and values of a service-site, non-profit organization, civic group, program, or entity
  • Articulate the connection between civic engagement experience and course content
  • Demonstrate the capacity to work collaboratively with peers and community partners
  • Recognize citizenship and describe one’s own growing sense of civic identity and commitment to social justice
  • Express informed thought on ethical, social, environmental, political or personal beliefs
