Celebrating the Legacy of President Carole A. Cowan
After receiving a recommendation from my Criminal Law Professor, I was given the opportunity
to introduce President Cowan for the September 19th, 2013 Constitution Day presentation and
help welcome Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis to talk about the Boston Marathon Bomb-
ings. At first I was really nervous about public speaking but really wanted to. I was in Boston
volunteering the day of the Marathon before the bombs went off and also in the days, weeks and
months following, helping with recovery. Although I was nervous about public speaking, I also
felt blessed to have the honor of introducing a woman who I looked up to and hoped someday
to be as confident, educated and well spoken as she was. President Cowan greeted me when I arrived, and sat me in the
front next to her. Right before it started, I thought, "I can't do this" just then she reached over, patted my hand and said,
"This is exciting, isn't it" I was instantly reminded of why I was there. To have the opportunity to do something I really
wanted to do and I did it! Ever since that day when I have to speak, (and I often do) I try to remember that I shouldn't be
nervous but be excited that I am in a place in my life where I am able to.

I was President of the
American Mathematical
Association of Two-Year
Colleges 2002 and 2003.
I invited President Cowan
to our annual meeting as
a special guest, which
she graciously accepted, where she addressed the
1,000 attendees. This meeting was in Salt Lake City
at the beautiful Grand America Hotel. A group took
Carole to dinner in a nice restaurant. At one point
she said "I think I've been here before. ... I know
I have, I recognize the bar." Indeed any diner at
that restaurant would remember it, it is unique,
but we all had a chuckle. Carol was, as always,
gracious.

My memories span
the years working
at MCC, but I am
particularly honored
to have collaborated
with her during my
years working at the
historic homes. I
have always been inspired by her passion and
enthusiasm for the houses and events that
take place at the college. She is a model of
leadership at its best! Her genuine, pleasant
and professional demeanor is admirable!
