Celebrating the Legacy of President Carole A. Cowan
I was an
impression-
able, single
mother when
I attended
MCC at the
age of 27 but
I watched you and I learned from you. A power-
house and a force to be reckoned with, you always
made yourself available to students and that well-
balanced mixture of strength and compassion taught
me well. You were and still are such an incredible
example for women. A tireless work ethic, ability to
network and a true desire to connect with the com-
munity instilled the values I hold true today. Middle-
sex provided amazing opportunities for me including
travel to Russia in the International Student Fellow-
ship Program and 15 years later, my son would follow
the same path and attend Middlesex except that he
would travel to Ireland instead. You told me almost
25 years ago that first-generation college graduates
could be the change in families and you were right.
My generation and the next would all go on to gradu-
ate college, several with Master's Degrees and our
lives are so blessed because of the vision, dedication
and sacrifice of inspiring leaders such as you.

Being at MCC for 14 years, I will always remember
and appreciate President Cowan's openness,
leadership and support of innovation in all areas
of the college. MCC is an exciting place to work
because President Cowan allows faculty and staff to
be creative and test out new ideas and approaches,
as I have seen in Enrollment Management and
Workforce Development. I will also always
remember her strong belief and commitment to
Professional Development for employees as a
means to constant learning and professional growth.
Because of her support, I was able to participate in
the CCLA program and pursue further studies in a
doctoral program as well as assume different
positions in the college. I will miss her leadership,
but I wish President Cowan the best in her
future endeavors!!

My favorite quote from one of President
Cowan's speeches was "We row this
boat together!" It has always helped me
with my career as an employee with
Middlesex Community College for the
past 23 years. Her leadership will be
missed.

I have known Carole since she was an instructor here at the college and I have watched her rise through the ranks. The
one thing that always struck me about her is that she did everything with aplomb. She was always a calm and confident
presence no matter what she did. When she became president I knew in my heart that she would be this college's
greatest advocate. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with her and for her.
